Hank Green to Speak May 3; Event Is Open to Public

Hank Green, a best-selling author, science communicator and content creator, will deliver a moderated Q&A as part of the Distinguished Lectures Committee's series at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 3, at Bud Walton Arena. The event will be free and open to the public. All Athletic Department gameday venue policies will be in effect for this lecture.

Green has been making things on the internet since the early 90s. Since starting a video blog with his brother in 2007, Hank has launched, built and sustained a number of projects. He's a science communicator, video creator and entrepreneur. In 2007, he and his brother started a video blog called Vlogbrothers that continues to this day. That year, they also created The Project for Awesome, a charity project that has raised over $10 million for charities to date. In 2008, Green launched DFTBA.com with his friend Alan Lastufka; that company now helps dozens of creators create and sell products including Nathan Zed, Kurzgesagt and The McElroy Brothers. In 2010, Green created VidCon, which has become the world's largest gathering that celebrates the community, craft and industry of online video.

VidCon was acquired by Viacom in 2018. In 2012 Hank and John Green launched SciShow and Crash Course and created their educational media company, Complexly, which produces content that is used in nearly every high school in America and has produced videos that have been viewed more than two billion times.

In 2013, Green launched Subbable, a subscription-based crowdfunding platform that was acquired by Patreon in 2015. Hank and his brother also entered the world of podcasting in 2015 with Dear Hank and John, a dubious advice podcast. He has since added Delete This, a podcast where his wife critiques his Twitter feed, and SciShow: Tangents a science-focused, humorous game show to his list of podcasts. Complexly continues to launch and grow YouTube channels including Journey to the Microcosmos, Eons, Healthcare Triage, Origin of Everything, SciShow Kids and more. Green lives in Montana with his wife and son.

As with any events in Athletic Department facilities, the following venue rules will apply:

CLEAR BAG POLICY

Bags that are clear plastic, vinyl or PVC and do not exceed 12" x 6" x 12" or one-gallon clear plastic freezer bag (Ziploc bag or similar). Individuals may also carry a small clutch purses, no larger than 4.5" x 6.5", with or without a handle or strap. All clear bags and clutch purses will be screened prior to entry into the venue. All bags and purses not meeting the above requirements will not be permitted. Although permitted, childcare items, including diapers, must also be carried in an approved clear bag. Individuals carrying required medical supplies or devices into the venue are not subject to the clear bag policy, but will need to go through the bag check line at their entry gate for a thorough screening of the bag and the medical items. The person requiring these supplies or devices must accompany the bag at all times. Medical exception bags will be tagged once cleared through security.

NOT PERMITTED

Weapons (including without limitation, knives, clubs, firearms, explosives), umbrellas, beach balls, strollers, baby seats, chairs, backpacks, coolers, banners, food or beverages, alcohol, illegal drugs, artificial noisemakers, video cameras, heaters, laser devices, flags and unapproved bags.

This event is sponsored by Distinguished Lectures Committee through the Office of Student Activities and is free to current University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, students who pay the Student Activities Fee, and students must show ID for entrance. Admission for general public and non-fee-paying students is contingent upon seating availability and will be on a first-come, first-served basis after fee-paying students are admitted.
